Safe Hydrogen Project
We’ve been writing hydrogen safety standards for nearly 70 years, and we’re continuing to write new standards today to meet the needs of the new economy. Our standards will make sure that each individual piece of the new hydrogen economy, from production to storage to delivery to application, works together as a seamless, interoperable, and interconnected network. Our work is vital to making the hydrogen economy a reality.
Who we are
The Safe Hydrogen Project is a collaborative global effort to develop and distribute safety information for the production, storage, transport, and use of hydrogen. The Safe Hydrogen Project is an initiative of the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) which has been a global leader in hydrogen safety for more than 70 years.
The Hydrogen Shift
We’re at the cusp of one of the biggest transformations in history – the shift to a hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is poised to drive everything from power generation to air transport, shipping, mobility, and infrastructure.
Two things are essential to making this vast new hydrogen energy network function – safety, and interoperability; and CGA’s Safe Hydrogen Project sits at the intersection of those two imperatives.
Vision
The Safe Hydrogen Project is committed to realizing the full potential of the hydrogen energy economy. We believe that by continually assessing hazards in the production, storage, transport, and use of hydrogen, and developing comprehensive and broadly applicable safety information and regulations, we can assure universal access to safety resources, and drive a new era of sustainable development, growth, and productivity.
Mission
Unlock the potential of the hydrogen energy era by developing safety standards and fostering their adoption across the interconnected global economy thereby promoting industry growth.
CGA’s mission is to promote ever-improving safe, secure, and environmentally responsible manufacture, transportation, storage, transfilling, and disposal of industrial, medical, and food gases and their containers. More than 140 companies worldwide are members of CGA, from multinational corporations to family-owned businesses. These companies represent all facets of the industry: manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and transporters of gases, cryogenic liquids, and related products.
When it comes to hydrogen, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) has been developing related standards for more than half a century – we published our first hydrogen safety standard in 1955.
The standards we develop are incorporated by regulators, industrial engineers, designers, and zoning bodies at the federal, state, and provincial level. We’re ANSI accredited and we have long worked with ISO and the UN to create model regulations and harmonize standards across borders in this increasingly connected world.

CGA Hydrogen Membership
CGA is the recognized leader in the development of gas and equipment standards in North America and around the world, many of which are referenced by regulators at all levels of government. When it comes to hydrogen, CGA has been developing related standards for nearly 70 years.
Now, as hydrogen enters potentially its biggest renaissance since it’s discovery in 1766, CGA is calling on companies from all sectors of the hydrogen economy to join them in developing the standards we will need to enable the safe and reliable use of hydrogen in the future. As a CGA Hydrogen Member you may partake in one of CGA’s Hydrogen Committees which identify and develop the operational safety standards that empower the hydrogen energy economy.
